KUALA LUMPUR – Checks conducted by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim) on the contents of indie film Mentega Terbang have found that it goes against the theology and way of life of Muslims from the Syafie school of thought in Malaysia.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar said Jakim would submit a detailed comment to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission so that action could be taken in accordance with the law.

He said the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department was also asked to call the parties involved in the production of the film for follow-up procedures.

“The Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) will not compromise with the distribution of any content that can tarnish the sanctity of Islam, and worse still, invite controversy and affect the harmony of the Malaysian community.

“I would also like to advise creatives to be more careful in producing and distributing content to the public so that the government’s goals for Malaysia Madani can be achieved,” he said in a statement today.

Na’im also advised the public to be more careful in choosing shows for family members to watch, to avoid them being exposed to elements that could affect their Islamic faith.

Previously, the local indie film released on a video-streaming platform invited criticism and anger from the public as it allegedly featured scenes with elements that contradicted religious beliefs. – Bernama, March 2, 2023
